The beginning of Winter in the Northern Rivers is a special time for locals and visitors alike. The peak season crowds are winding down, winter swells have the surf pumping and the summer humidity is easing off. We are so blessed to enjoy a mild climate all year round and the cooler months are a magical time to take in the best of what the region has to offer.

Here are five reasons to plan your escape to Byron Bay in May!

1. Winter Warmer

With daytime temperatures reaching the low 20’s throughout the Winter months, May is one of the most pleasant times of the year to visit Northern New South Wales and explore the great outdoors.

2. Waterfalls are flowing

The Byron Bay Waterfalls are spectacular sights to behold all within a short hinterland drive from our Belongil Beach Resort. These secluded spots are tucked away in the nearby lush national parks and are the perfect out-of-town places to explore during your stay. Our top three falls to check out are Killen Falls, Minyon Falls and Protestors Falls.

3. Beat The Crowds

Let’s face it; the whole idea of a “getaway” is to escape the crowds. So with less tourists in the May offseason and the locals at work midweek, there is ample space to enjoy the ocean with minimum disturbance. Less traffic in the water = more waves to be scored!

4. Whale Migration Season

Byron Bay, being the most easterly point in Australia makes it the perfect vantage place to spot the magnificent humpback whales making a splash as they migrate north to calve their young. Book a dolphin kayaking tour with Cape Byron Kayaks for an an incredible experience to witness these animals in their native habitat.

5. The Byron Comedy Fest

Laughter is the best medicine! The Byron Comedy Fest takes places from the 17th – 19th of May at the iconic Byron Bay Surf Club. The vibrant and light-hearted program includes belly-aching stand-up performances, slapstick workshops and even laughter yoga. Fun for all the family.
